Implications of a Temperature-dependent Initial Mass Function. I. Photometric Template Fitting

چکیده

Abstract A universal stellar initial mass function (IMF) should not be expected from theoretical models of star formation, but little conclusive observational evidence for a variable IMF has been uncovered. In this paper, parameterization the is introduced into photometric template fitting COSMOS2015 catalog. The resulting best-fit templates suggest systematic variations in IMF, with most galaxies exhibiting top-heavier populations than Milky Way. At fixed redshift, only small range IMFs are found, typical becoming progressively increasing redshift. Additionally, subpopulations ULIRGs, quiescent and star-forming compared predictions population feedback show clear qualitative similarities to evolution dust temperatures.

Cosmological Implications of a Stellar Initial Mass Function that Varies with the Jeans Mass in Galaxies

Observations of star-forming galaxies at high z have suggested discrepancies in the inferred star formation rates (SFRs) either between data and models or between complementary measures of the SFR. These putative discrepancies could all be alleviated if the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is systematically weighted towards more high-mass star formation in rapidly star-forming galaxies. Here...

The Stellar Initial Mass Function

The current status of both the observational evidence and the theory of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is reviewed, with particular attention to the two basic, apparently universal features shown by all observations of nearby stellar systems: (1) a characteristic stellar mass of the order of one solar mass, and (2) a power-law decline of the IMF at large masses similar to the original ...

Mapping the core mass function to the initial mass function

It has been shown that fragmentation within self-gravitating, turbulent molecular clouds (‘turbulent fragmentation’) can naturally explain the observed properties of protostellar cores, including the core mass function (CMF). Here, we extend recently developed analytic models for turbulent fragmentation to follow the time-dependent hierarchical fragmentation of selfgravitating cores, until they...

The Initial Mass Function of Stars

Observations and theory of the IMF are briefly reviewed. Slight variations have been observed, although they are difficult to prove unambiguously. Most detailed theoretical models reproduce the IMF, but because they use different assumptions and conditions, there is no real convergence of explanations yet.
